Profile
Dr Martí Lopez Andreu
Senior Lecturer in HRM and Employment Relations
I am a scholar of work and employment relations whose research examines how labour markets are transformed by economic restructuring, regulatory change, and new forms of work organisation. My work focuses on employment relations, labour regulation, collective action, precarious employment, and platform work, with a particular interest in how workers organise and exercise power under fragmented employment regimes.
My research is driven by the idea that understanding labour regulation requires looking beyond formal institutions to the everyday practices through which workers, trade unions, employers and the state shape employment relations. I combine insights from employment relations, sociology of work and political economy to investigate how labour institutions evolve in response to liberalisation, digitalisation, subcontracting and the platform economy. A central theme running through my work is the relationship between worker mobilisation, labour market institutions and the regulation of work, particularly in contexts characterised by precarious employment, dependent self-employment and fragmented labour markets.
Methodologically, I adopt comparative and mixed-method approaches, drawing on qualitative, quantitative and historical research across different national contexts, particularly the United Kingdom and Southern Europe. My research aims to produce theoretically informed, empirically rigorous and policy-relevant evidence that contributes to contemporary debates on the future of work, labour regulation and employment rights.
My research has been funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the European Commission (Marie Curie Fellowship and Framework Programmes), the British Academy, the Director of Labour Market Enforcement (BEIS), and national and university research funders. I have published in leading international journals including Work, Employment and Society, British Journal of Industrial Relations, Journal of Industrial Relations, Economic and Industrial Democracy and European Journal of Industrial Relations, amongst others. Alongside my academic research, I work closely with policymakers, trade unions and worker organisations to translate research into policy and practice, particularly in relation to labour standards enforcement, platform work and innovative forms of worker-led regulation.
My areas of interest include:
- Changes in employment regulation institutions and the impact of neo-liberal policies.
- Industrial relations, including union practices and emerging forms of protest/collective action.
- Precarious work, precarious workers and insecurity in the workplace.
