Dr Pooya Sareh is an Associate Professor (~Senior Lecturer) and the Director of the Creative Design Engineering Lab (Cdel) at Âé¶¹´«Ã½, as well as a Research Professor at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM), Spain. Prior to these current appointments, he was an Assistant Professor (~Lecturer) in Engineering Design, Director of Cdel, and Programme Director of postgraduate taught programmes in mechanical engineering, design engineering, and manufacturing systems, at the University of Liverpool (2018-23). From 2016 to 2018, he was Module Leader and Lecturer of Engineering Design in the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College London, and a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art.
Dr Sareh has published over 110 papers in international journals across the fields of structural design and mechanics, robotic systems and mechanisms, engineering design and optimisation, and vehicle design. He is an Associate Editor for the journals Structures (Elsevier) and Decision Analytics Journal (Elsevier), and also serves on the editorial boards of several journals, including Engineering in Extreme Environments (Springer Nature), Experimental Results (Cambridge University Press), Engineering Reports (Wiley), Multidiscipline Modeling in Materials and Structures (Emerald), and PLOS ONE.
Dr Sareh’s research excellence and inventive contributions have been recognised through a number of international awards and distinctions. He received a Gold Medal at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2026, for his project on Origami Metastructures, together with the Special Prize for the Best International Invention and Innovation from the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT). He has also been included in Stanford/Elsevier’s Global Top 2% Scientists list in Mechanical Engineering & Transport since 2022. His scholarly contributions have received further recognition through the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design 2021 Editors’ Choice Paper Award in Machine Design, as well as the Excellent Young Advisory Editor Award of 2022 from Engineering Reports, published by Wiley.
He graduated from Cambridge University with a PhD in Engineering (Structural Mechanics) in 2014, during which he also attended the Florence Academy of Art, Italy. Subsequently, he joined the Aerial Robotics Laboratory at Imperial College London as a Post-doctoral Research Associate in Robotics. He holds BSc (First Class Hons.) and MSc (Distinction) degrees in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, and the University of Sheffield, UK, respectively.
