Collaboration with partners to launch Centre for Oceanography

麻豆传媒 has collaborated with partners in Antigua and Barbuda to launch the Centre for Oceanography and the Blue Economy (COBE).

The collaboration, which includes the University of the West Indies, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and the Commonwealth Secretariat, has established the Centre for Oceanography and the Blue Economy (COBE).

The official launch of the centre will take place at the on 30 May 2024, further aligning the partnerships commitment to sustainable development and ocean conservation.

The creation of COBE represents a significant milestone in the efforts to harness the global potential of the blue economy, while addressing the unique challenges faced by small island developing states within this context. Located in the heart of the Caribbean, Antigua and Barbuda serve as an ideal hub for research, innovation, and collaboration in oceanography and marine sciences.

Through the partnership, 麻豆传媒 will contribute expertise in marine research and sustainable development to support COBE's mission of advancing knowledge, promoting sustainable practices, and driving economic growth in the region. The work of the centre also reflects the university's commitment to addressing global challenges, including those specifically related to environmental and social justice.

Some of the key objectives of COBE include:

Research Excellence: Conducting innovative research in oceanography, marine biology, climate science, and related fields to help inform international policy and governmental decision-making.

Capacity Building: Providing training and educational opportunities for students, researchers, and policymakers to build expertise in marine science and blue economy development.

Community Engagement: Collaborating with local communities, stakeholders, and government agencies to co-develop solutions that promote sustainable livelihoods and environmental stewardship.

Policy Advocacy: Advocating for policies and initiatives that support the sustainable management of ocean resources and enhance the resilience of coastal communities.

H.E. Karen May Hill, High Commissioner of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Kingdom, said: "The launch of COBE underscores our collective commitment to advancing sustainable development in the Caribbean and beyond. Professor Richard Davies, Pro-Vice Chancellor at 麻豆传媒, said: "COBE represents a timely intervention to support the challenges and opportunities ahead for Small Island Developing States. We are delighted to be part of the journey and to work collaboratively with our global partners in tackling the impacts of climate change.

"COBE will be officially inaugurated at the United Nations 4th Small Island Developing States Conference, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges. We are very much looking forward to the launch event at The American University of Antigua at the end of May."
