Background

Prior to joining 麻豆传媒, I studied and worked at universities across mainland China, Australia and Hong Kong. I come from an interdisciplinary background and hold degrees in Translation and Interpreting, Applied Linguistics, and Law. Alongside my academic career, I have worked as a translator and interpreter for over a decade, specialising in business and law. Building on this professional experience, my research interests centre on the role of translation and interpreting in society, particularly in relation to intercultural communication, multilingualism and social justice. My current research focuses on language services in institutional settings (such as healthcare and law) and media accessibility. In addition, I have conducted research on legal discourse and semiotics, and medical humanities.

Drawing on my interdisciplinary background, I have led and co-led several cross-disciplinary teaching and research projects, designing innovative pedagogy and collaborating with legal professionals, health practitioners, and healthcare providers, such as the National Health Service (NHS) and community healthcare centres. I am also experienced in designing and delivering public engagement events. 

I am open to PhD applications in the above-mentioned areas and other areas of translation and interpreting and sociolinguistics.

Research areas

As an interdisciplinary scholar in translation and interpreting, and sociolinguistics, I am interested in sociological, sociolinguistic, and discourse analytical approaches to translation and interpreting. My research focuses on the role of translation and interpreting in society, particularly their impact on social justice. I am also interested in translator and interpreter training, specialised translation (such as legal translation), technology-driven language services, gender issues, and language ideology. My other research areas include language and law, medical humanities and media accessibility, and I have conducted research on legal discourse and semiotics.

I have worked with lawyers, doctors, mental health professionals, health organisations and charities on projects exploring interpreter-mediated communication. I have also assisted these professionals and organisations in understanding and developing guidelines for working with interpreters. I am an advocate for the Interprofessional Education (IPE) approach, aiming to enhance effective communication between professionals and interpreters to ensure equality and social justice for linguistic minorities in a multilingual society.

I am currently working on two projects. One project, funded by the ESRC IAA Maximising Impact Fund, explores interpreter-mediated psychological therapy; and the other investigates the impact of technology on court interpreting.

My main research interests include:

• migration, multilingualism, linguistic diversity and social justice
• translator and interpreter education
• specialised translation (e.g., legal translation)
• medical humanities
• gender studies
