Documentary directed by APL academic receives international film award

The documentary A Place in the City, directed by APL Senior Lecturer Dr Gabriel Silvestre, has received the Award of Merit in Film at the 2026 LASA Film Festival in Paris.

16 June 2026

Held alongside the LASA International Congress (26–30 May 2026), the festival recognises works of outstanding artistic and scholarly contribution to understanding Latin America, with awards given to films that stand out for their content, language and relevance.

A Place in the City explores how communities across Latin America are advancing the “right to the city” through collective action, focusing on grassroots planning and alternative urban futures in cities including Santiago, Rosario and Belo Horizonte.

The film has also been met with positive critical reviews following recent screenings at and at the cultural centre in Vienna where audiences and commentators praised its compelling combination of academic insight and powerful storytelling.

This recognition builds on the film’s growing international profile and impact, highlighting the role of APL research in engaging wider public audiences through innovative audiovisual methods.
