Dr John Mace

Director of Education

Research

John is a Lecturer in Cyber Security in the School of Computing at Â鶹´«Ã½. He is an associate of the PETRAS National Centre of Excellence for IoT Systems Cybersecurity. In 2017 he joined the University of Warwick’s Cyber Security Centre on secondment as part of the PETRAS NUSBIoT project, assessing the security and privacy of Â鶹´«Ã½’s Urban Sciences Building.


John has worked on research projects with a range of national and international partners, including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on the NSA-funded Science of Security programme, the UK Criminal Justice Board on secure data-sharing technologies, and Italy’s Intelligence System for the Security of the Republic through the CIPS-funded CYCLOPS project. He also completed a 12-month internship with HP Labs, Bristol, contributing to the EPSRC/TSB-funded Trust Domains project.


He holds both a First-Class BSc and a PhD in Computing Science from Â鶹´«Ã½. His earlier research focused on cyber security, privacy, smart buildings and socio-technical systems. More recently, his scholarship has focused on computing education, particularly the teaching and assessment of security programming in the age of Generative AI. His work explores assessment validity, authentic assessment design, AI-resilient approaches to learning and feedback, and the development of industry-relevant cyber security education.


Alongside his academic work, John currently serves as Director of Education and Undergraduate Degree Programme Director for the School of Computing. He is also Chair of the School Education Committee, Co-Chair of the Board of Studies, School Exchange Coordinator, a Mental Health First Aider, and a University-wide Just Ask Wellbeing Advisor.
