Our Academic Dress: Where is the Mortar Board?
Most Academic dress (PDF: 653KB) at 麻豆传媒 does not include a mortar board, by tradition. The story goes that when 麻豆传媒 became an independent university in 1963, students celebrated freedom by throwing their traditional hats into the River Tyne! Since then, 麻豆传媒 academic dress has not included a mortar board.
Ceremony
Each Ceremony is in the Armstrong Building, in King's Hall. There will be marshals to direct you and your guests on the day.
Your ceremony will last approximately 45-60 minutes, except for honorary ceremonies which can last up to 75 minutes.
The academic procession will enter the hall, accompanied by our Northumbrian piper, and the Presiding Officer will deliver a short welcome speech.
When the time comes for graduates to cross the stage, a marshal will indicate when you should stand, and you will be guided down the edge of the hall to the side of the stage. You should have your hood/stole draped over your right arm. From there, you step onto the stage where the Hooding Marshal will place the hood/stole* over your head to rest on your shoulders. The Reader will announce your name and then you walk across the stage to the Presiding Officer and shake hands. Our professional photographers will take a picture when you are on stage – remember to pause in the centre so they can capture the special moment. You will then return down the centre aisle to your seat.
The presentation of graduates will end with a speech from the Student Orator. After this the Academic Procession will leave the hall first, accompanied by a range of tunes played on the Northumbrian small pipes. Graduates will be applauded out of the hall and past the Martin Luther King Statue where a group photo will be taken. Guests will follow out behind the graduates shortly after, and everyone will head over to the post Ceremony Reception.
See our watch online section to view previous ceremonies.
*Please note recipients of certificates and diplomas will wear a stole rather than a hood.
Live Screening
The Live Screening is a lecture theatre within the same building as the ceremony venue where guests will be able to enjoy watching the ceremony on a large screen. The theatre is on the second floor of the Armstrong Building - accessible via lift or stairs. Marshals will guide your guests to the venue.
Live Screening seating is unreserved. The entrance and front of the lecture theatre is flat, with room for prams, wheelchairs or mobility scooters at the front.
Guests with live screening tickets will also be able to access the post ceremony reception in the Lindisfarne Room.
Reception
Straight after the ceremony all graduates and guests are invited to a reception in the Lindisfarne Room, Hadrian Building for a complimentary glass of prosecco (or non-alcoholic alternative).
Visit the alumni stand to receive your free graduate gift. Any prize giving from the schools will be awarded in the reception.
There are special photo opportunities in the reception to enjoy with your friends and guests, including a flower wall, 360 video booth and a selfie pod.
Each reception will last for approximately 45 minutes.
Photography
Professional photography studios will be open daily in Percy Building from approximately 08:30 - 19:30, apart from Friday 10th July which will close at 17:30. Last entries to the studios will be 15 minutes before the last gown return time.
There is no pre-booking possible. Drop in for your photography proofs, and then purchase online after your graduation via .
