School Inductions
The first week of a new academic year is dedicated to a programme of induction and orientation activities and it is a chance for you to complete registration and settle in before teaching begins.
There are optional social activities like and compulsory activities like registration and school inductions. All you need to know before starting the new academic year can be found on the Student Welcome page.
It is important that you complete your registration as soon as you arrive on campus and accept all Canvas invitations sent to your new ncl.ac.uk email address.
2026/27 Induction

Recommended Reading
You’re not required to read anything before you arrive but if you’d like to do some reading. However, we do have a Recommended Reading List (PDF 160KB). You should be able to pick them up cheaply second-hand or as e-books, but please don’t feel the need to buy them. All of the required reading will be available in the University Library, either electronically or in hard copy.
Student Staff Committee
The Student Staff Committee (undergraduate and postgraduate) is made up of both staff and student representatives. Its aim is to improve communication between the two and discuss matters of mutual concern.
Any issues raised by the Student Staff Committees are passed to the Board of Studies for more formal discussion.
The 2026-27 degree and stage representatives have not yet been appointed. Contact details about the incoming student representative will be on the Student Portal and on the notice boards in the Student Lounge and on Floor 1 of the Armstrong Building by October.
