Heritage science experts at Â鶹´«Ã½ have received £1.5M to fund two key projects aimed at enhancing archaeological materials science and digital heritage research.
The first project will support the Â鶹´«Ã½ Material Culture Analytical Suite (NeMCAS), allowing it to develop its facilities by increasing capacity and broaden the range of specialist analysis that can be carried out.
Professor Lisa-Marie Shillito, NeMCAS Director and Professor of Geoarchaeology, described the investment as a major step forward, allowing them to work with a broader range of materials and provide access to cutting-edge analytical tools tailored for heritage research. She emphasized the potential to strengthen the heritage sector in the North East while supporting ongoing research at the University.
With a world-leading team working on all aspects of archaeological materials science and landscape archaeology, NeMCAS is a rare facility, stimulating innovative new approaches in archaeology, biology and engineering.
The second project, in collaboration with the British International Research Institutes (BIRI), will develop a new platform to make Mediterranean heritage science collections more widely accessible. Professor Mark Jackson highlighted the University’s long-standing partnerships with institutions in Athens, Rome, and Ankara and expressed enthusiasm for making these significant heritage collections available to a wider audience.
We are looking forward to helping grow the heritage sector in the North East as well as supporting all the great research being done by colleagues at Â鶹´«Ã½.
