Overview

This unique combination of data science and entrepreneurship gives you the tools to identify opportunities and build new ventures. 

Today’s data science tools give us the ability to get to the heart of our most complex problems. In this conversion course, we’ll give you the tools to take these insights even further.

In our Data Science and Entrepreneurship MSc, you'll analyse and interpret rich datasets. You'll then use these findings to build sustainable and innovative new projects.

You'll be trained by data science professionals, including experts at the . NICD works with organisations worldwide to solve challenges through data. You'll receive a strong grounding in programming, AI, statistics and machine learning. We'll discuss real industry challenges, and give you the training to deliver solutions.

You’ll also explore the relationship between technology and entrepreneurship. You'll learn how to identify business opportunities, build new ventures, and consider factors such as value propositions and market trends.

In your final semester, you'll either deliver a dissertation, or build a business plan for a venture of your choice.

You'll graduate with the ability to take an entrepreneurial approach to projects. It's a skillset that will transform your career, whether you're starting a new business or re-thinking an established one.

This conversion course is designed for applicants who do not hold a degree in computer science or a related computational field.

What you'll learn

Phase one: Core foundations in Data Science

You’ll build a solid foundation in programming, statistics, machine learning and data handling and visualisation, using tools such as R and Python.

In your second semester, you’ll explore the theory and applications of data science in greater depth. A skills-based module delivered by NICD will allow you to work on solutions to real challenges drawn from NICD’s client projects.

You’ll also develop your legal skills, focusing on:

  • legal frameworks
  • data protection, privacy and security
  • equality and non-discrimination

Phase two: Applying entrepreneurial thinking to Data Science

You’ll learn how to identify opportunities using data science and develop them into well-structured projects.

You’ll explore how to create sustainable new ventures, discuss the relationship between technology and entrepreneurship and discover how to develop entrepreneurial strategies.

Phase three: Capstone project

You’ll undertake an in-depth project that tests your knowledge of data science and entrepreneurship.

This may involve:

  • A research dissertation on an entrepreneurship and data science topic
  • The development of a practical business plan for a new venture related to data science

Credit transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning

Your development

Through a module delivered by the NICD, you’ll develop key professional skills by working through real innovation processes. You’ll take a problem from initial conception through to a practical, client-focused solution.

You’ll also strengthen your teamwork and communication skills by working on a group project. You’ll learn how to present your findings clearly to non-specialist audiences.

Research skills

You’ll learn how to formulate and deliver in-depth and data-driven research projects. Key skills will include formulating robust hypotheses, selecting appropriate analytical methods, analysing data and communicating findings in a clear and compelling way. 

Practical skills

This course builds entrepreneurial skills, which are valuable for starting new businesses and developing projects in established organisations.

You’ll learn:

  • to apply entrepreneurial and innovative thinking to existing problems
  • to identify opportunities for data-driven innovations that address existing business challenges
  • to scope, synthesise and analyse new ideas, approaches and processes
  • to use appropriate statistical software to analyse data sets, and interpret the results
  • to identify and address potential ethical issues in projects or ideas

You'll also become adept at working independently and in groups to a set deadline. You'll improve your presentation and problem-solving skills through industry-focused challenges and projects.

Work experience opportunities

While this course does not include a formal placement, you'll gain practical experience through working with our industry partners on real-world projects. 

Our Careers Service also offers support in securing work experience and placements.

Your future

This course is designed to help you identify opportunities using data science and turn them into sustainable, innovative projects. 

These are crucial skills in entrepreneurship, but will also enable you to build and manage projects in established organisations. When you graduate, you'll be able to progress to a career in fields including:

  • launching start-ups (either solo or as a group)
  • entrepreneurial and innovation consultancy
  • large corporates
  • third-sector organisations such as charities and social enterprises
  • policy design for local, national or international organisations

Further study

Once you graduate, you’ll have the knowledge to progress to PhD-level study and further research opportunities in academia.

Urban Sciences Building

The Urban Sciences Building (USB) is a flagship £58 million development located on the £350 million Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Helix regeneration site in the heart of Âé¶¹´«Ã½. Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Helix brings together:

  • academia
  • the public sector
  • communities
  • business and industry

The USB is a living laboratory and has over 4,000 sensors that record detailed research data, which can be used in student projects.

You'll join the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics, based in the Herschel Building.
