Overview
Farming is constantly evolving.
Data and advanced technologies are now crucial tools in maintaining food security. Producers are embracing new thinking to improve agricultural production, farming efficiency, crop management, product quality and supply chains.
In this conversion degree, you'll apply data science techniques to one of society's most essential fields.
You'll receive training in core data science principles including:
- programming
- statistics
- artificial intelligence
- machine learning
You'll work hands-on with the latest tools, and discuss solutions to real-world challenges.
You’ll then learn how these techniques are transforming agriculture. You’ll investigate how digital technologies, including imaging, sensing systems, autonomous platforms and data analytics can deliver better crop production and more precise breeding.
You’ll be taught by accomplished data science professionals, including experts at the . NICD collaborates with ambitious organisations of all sizes to unlock the potential of their data.

This conversion course is designed for applicants who do not hold a degree in computer science or a related computational field. It is suitable for those looking to enter an agritechnology-related data science role, or those in agricultural roles who want to master data science techniques.

What you'll learn
Phase one: Core foundations in Data Science
You'll build a solid foundation in programming, statistics, machine learning and data handling and visualisation, using tools such as R and Python.
In your second semester, you’ll explore the theory and application of data science in greater depth. A skills-based module delivered by NICD will allow you to work on solutions to real challenges drawn from NICD’s client projects.
You’ll also develop your legal skills, focusing on:
- legal frameworks
- data protection, privacy and security
- equality and non-discrimination
These will be discussed from a UK/EU perspective.
Phase two: Data Science in Agritechnology
Explore how data science tools and approaches can inform new advances in agritechnology.
Through modules in precision breeding and phenomics, you’ll learn about how advances in genomics are driving precision breeding, and how sensors and imaging technologies are enabling more productive and sustainable farming.
Phase three: Capstone project
This in-depth research project combines your knowledge of data science and agritechnology.
It may consist of:
- A research dissertation on an agritechnology and data science topic
- A project addressing an agritechnology challenge using data science. This may be in collaboration with agritech companies and other industry partners.

Data Science resources
Before the course begins, you’ll receive a set of resources designed to support your transition into data science. These materials provide a fast-paced refresher on key mathematical concepts, helping bridge the gap between what you’ve learned previously and what you'll encounter on the course. You’ll start your course with confidence and be able to refer to the resources as your learning progresses.
Practical sessions
The course is made up of a large number of practical sessions, allowing you to try out different skills and techniques with the support of academic staff and demonstrators.
Numbas learning software
You'll have access to specialist learning software called Numbas. Developed at Âé¶¹´«Ã½, it's now used by mathematicians and statisticians worldwide.This innovative software allows you to work on interactive code worksheets, so you can test and refine the mathematics skills you’ll need for data science.
Maths-Aid
Students can make use of Maths-Aid, a team of experts who provide support and advice on all aspects of maths and statistics.Statistics and Data Science clinic
During your capstone project, you’ll be supported by our Statistics and Data Science Clinic. You can book one-to-one sessions with our expert data scientists. Whether you need support with a technical issue or refining your analysis, tailored support is available to help your project progress. This support is in addition to your project supervisor.

Your development
Through a module delivered by the NICD, you’ll develop key professional skills by working through real innovation processes. You will take a problem from initial conception through to a practical, client-focused solution.
You’ll also strengthen your teamwork and communication skills by working on a group project. You’ll learn how to present your findings clearly to non-specialist audiences.
Research skills
You’ll learn how to formulate and deliver in-depth and data-driven research projects. Key skills will include formulating robust hypotheses, selecting appropriate analytical methods, analysing data and communicating findings in a clear and compelling way.
Practical skills
This course will give you the tools to collect and interpret valuable datasets, both in labs and in the field.
You’ll learn:
- to use programming languages and appropriate statistical software to analyse and interpret datasets
- to solve various data science and AI problems, and communicate findings and insights
- to apply agritechnology tools and phenomics platforms, using digital sensors and advanced imaging technologies
- to collect, manage and interpret agricultural and environmental data
- to harness datasets to support precision breeding, crop improvement and agriculture strategies
You'll also become adept at working independently and in groups to a set deadline, and you'll improve your presentation and problem-solving skills through industry-focused challenges and projects.

Agriculture Building
The Agriculture Building is the home of Agriculture and Animal Science, based in the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, and located on our vibrant, city-centre campus. Here, some of our state-of-the-art facilities include laboratories, plant growth incubators and vertical farming units.
During your studies, you'll have access to Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Farms. NU Farms encompasses mixed animal, arable and biomass operations, with a commercial dairy and beef herd and a planned bed-and-breakfast pig enterprise.
The farms are used for commercial, teaching and research purposes. They are equipped with advanced sensing technologies, including optical, spectral and agri-diagnostic sensors deployed across:
- handheld devices
- drone-based platforms
- fixed controlled-environment systems
- tractor-mounted equipment
- geo-referenced robotic systems.
This provides opportunities to develop skills relating to data gathering and analysis, soil sampling, animal and plant health, pests and weed identification.

Fees, Funding and Scholarships
Tuition fees for 2027 entry (per year)
As a general principle, you should expect the tuition fee to increase in each subsequent academic year of your course, subject to government regulations on fee increases and in line with inflation.
Depending on your residency history, if you’re a student from the EU, other EEA or a Swiss national, with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you’ll normally pay the ‘Home’ tuition fee rate and may be eligible for Student Finance England support.
EU students without settled or pre-settled status will normally be charged fees at the ‘International’ rate and will not be eligible for Student Finance England support. You may be eligible for a scholarship worth 25% off the international fee. Search our funding database.
