Aims
To demonstrate the ability to effectively reflect upon the legal dimensions of data science, through engaging in a practical skills exercise. It acts as a capstone that brings together thematically the issues dealt with in the taught component of the programme, applied in the context of a simulation of a real-world legal issue arising from the use of large data sets that could comprise personal or industrial data. This simulation activity can only run with a minimum of six students.
Outline Of Syllabus
The Data Science and Law Simulation Capstone is the project component of the Data Science and Law programme and it is intended to be an interdisciplinary research project integrating elements of Data Science and Law in a practical skills development activity. Students will engage in a simulation activity, in which students take on different roles in an ‘emergency’ simulation, in which they take on a particular role in a scenario developed by the module lead. This may entail (for example) a massive security breach in which personal data has been leaked onto the dark web; a ransomware attack making large volumes of consumer data inaccessible to a company; or an act of cyber warfare in which a large hospital has its infrastructure rendered inoperable. Students will be expected to ‘wargame’ the scenario, identifying their priorities, legal obligations, and potential responses, before then writing a reflection document.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
There are four workshops that prepare students for engaging in the final simulation activity, providing a low-stakes environment for practicing the required skills, and becoming familiar with the format of the assessment. The simulation activity takes place as a two hour ‘emergency room’ scenario activity, in which students are expected to apply the skills developed throughout the programme. Finally, the debrief workshop is used to discuss what occurred during the simulation, and for students to assess their own performance, identifying the strengths and weaknesses they demonstrated concerning the legally-required processes and procedures to be enacted in the context of a large data breach. This reflection will be used to write the reflection document.
