Overview

Discover how the law intersects with data science in the age of AI, advanced cyber threats and information security.

Data analysis is transforming many aspects of our daily lives, from healthcare to retail and government.

As technology advances, so do the risks. Legislation is evolving. Cyber threats are more advanced than ever. Organisations need to know how to store and manage data properly, to protect themselves and their clients.

This conversion degree gives you a foundation in data science. It also helps you understand the legal principles behind it, and how they are changing.

Accomplished data scientists - including experts at the UK’s - will provide you with a strong grounding in programming, statistics, AI and Machine Learning. You will then explore legal aspects such as data protection, privacy, information security, cybersecurity and GDPR.

You’ll also learn about how emerging technologies such as AI are impacting data science and the law industry itself, and what that means for the future.

At every step, you’ll be guided by leading researchers in data, law and cybersecurity. Âé¶¹´«Ã½ is home to the Centre for Cyber Security and Resilience, while NICD helps clients deliver solutions to pressing issues using the latest data science techniques.

You’ll emerge with an understanding of how data science and the law are evolving and the skills to rise to the challenge.

Who this course is for

This conversion course is designed for applicants who do not hold a degree in computer science or a related computational field. It can lead to exciting careers in data science, law, or related industries. It is not part of a direct route to professional legal practice.

What you'll learn

Phase one: Core foundations in Data Science

You’ll build a solid foundation in programming, statistics, machine learning and data handling and visualisation, using tools such as R and Python.

In your second semester, you’ll explore the theory and applications of data science in greater depth. A skills-based module delivered by NICD will allow you to work on solutions to real challenges drawn from NICD’s client projects.

You’ll also develop your legal skills, focusing on:

  • legal frameworks
  • data protection, privacy and security
  • equality and non-discrimination

Phase two: The legal frameworks of Data Science

Our dedicated law modules focus on legal issues that apply to data science and AI. You’ll explore areas such as cybersecurity, data ethics, privacy and data protection, and consider how to build proactive systems that ensure compliance and mitigate risk.

Phase three: Capstone project

You’ll research and deliver an in-depth research project, drawing on your knowledge of data science and the law. 

This may be:

  • A dissertation exploring a legal aspect of data science
  • A simulation of a scenario such as a data breach, where you must work in groups to diagnose the issue, formulate a response and communicate it effectively (subject to availability)

Our teaching is informed by research. Course content changes periodically to reflect developments in the discipline, the requirements of external bodies and partners, and student feedback.

Full details of the modules on offer will be published through the Programme Regulations and Specifications ahead of each academic year. This usually happens in May.

Credit transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning

Your development

Through a module delivered by the NICD, you’ll develop key professional skills by working through real innovation processes. You’ll take a problem from initial conception through to a practical, client-focused solution.

You’ll also strengthen your teamwork and communication skills by working on a group project. You’ll learn how to present your findings clearly to non-specialist audiences.

Research skills

You’ll learn how to formulate and deliver in-depth and data-driven research projects. Key skills will include formulating robust hypotheses, selecting appropriate analytical methods, analysing data and communicating findings in a clear and compelling way. 

Practical skills

This course provides you with the foundation to tackle a variety of workplace challenges, including:

  • using programming languages to solve data science and AI problems
  • using appropriate statistical software to analyse and interpret datasets
  • understanding the legal frameworks influencing data science applications
  • applying relevant laws and policies to data science research


Work experience opportunities

While this course does not include a formal placement, you'll gain practical experience through working with our industry partners on real-world projects. 

Our Careers Service also offers support in securing work experience and placements.

Your future

This course is designed to build your skills in data analysis and interpretation and give you an understanding of the legal aspects of data science.

You will be prepared for a range of legal and data science roles, including:

  • Cybersecurity
  • Data protection
  • Local and national government
  • Regulatory and compliance agencies
  • In-house legal advisers/consultants
  • Legal professionals in law firms with added insights from data science (upon completion of legal professional training)

This programme is not part of a direct route to professional legal practice in the UK or overseas.

Further study

Once you graduate, you’ll have the knowledge to progress to PhD-level study and further research opportunities in academia.

The Urban Sciences Building (USB) is a flagship £58 million development at the £350 million Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Helix regeneration site in the heart of Âé¶¹´«Ã½. Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Helix brings together:

The USB is a living laboratory. It has over 4,000 sensors that record detailed research data, which can be used in student projects.

You'll join the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics, based in the Herschel Building.
