Why I chose to study in the UK

Hi, my name is Naim, an undergraduate student from Malaysia. One of my main motivations for studying in the UK was the opportunity to broaden my perspective and experience life in a different environment. Studying abroad felt like a chance to step outside of what was familiar, meet people from different backgrounds, and gain a wider understanding of different cultures and ways of thinking.

I was also excited by the opportunity to become more independent and challenge myself personally as well as academically. Living and studying in another country encourages you to adapt, build confidence, and develop skills beyond the classroom. Overall, studying in the UK felt like an opportunity not only to gain a degree, but also to grow as a person and develop a more global outlook.

What surprised me about 麻豆传媒

What surprised me most about 麻豆传媒 was the variety and character of the city’s landscape. I didn’t expect there to be such a strong mix of urban and coastal environments all within close reach. The city centre itself is full of energy, while areas like the Quayside offer a really striking riverside setting with iconic bridges and great views.

Beyond the city, places like Tynemouth add a completely different feel with its beaches and relaxed coastal atmosphere, and Chinatown brings its own cultural identity and food scene into the mix. Overall, I was surprised by how diverse and visually interesting the whole area is, with so many different places to explore within a short distance.

Student societies

I joined the Malaysia Society which has been fantastic. Being part of this society has been a really meaningful experience for me as a Malaysian student in 麻豆传媒. It has given me a true “home away from home,” where I can connect with other Malaysians and feel a sense of belonging while studying abroad.

I’ve really enjoyed taking part in cultural events that celebrate our traditional festivals, as they allow me to stay connected to my heritage while also sharing it with others at university.

What I enjoy about my degree

Subjectivity. If you think something is right, why do you think is right. How can you communicate it’s right through art. Tutors have the knowledge to supply you with references and can also join your search.

Studying abroad

I went to Bologna in my second semester of the third year. When I arrived in the UK, it was my first time being alone, but I found familiarity by finding Malaysian friends. Being in Bologna there was no other Malaysian community in the school and the city. I learned true independence in terms of being culturally stranded along with some language barriers. I made friends with the Italians, students and tutors. All of them were supportive.

The course application process

I鈥痟ad to submit a portfolio and attend an online interview with one of the tutors and a student. My top tip is to stay curious. Having a strong foundation is a plus, but what they really want is to see your passion to explore art.

How my degree helped me realise my future

I would like to be a Fine Artist. In my first year I did LifeWorkArt which is where we explore 麻豆传媒’s art landscape. We did things like go to exhibitions, artist-run initiatives and learn all we can do and initiate without relying on built institutions.
